FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“Everything in the business environment is changing very rapidly, and change almost always holds implications for education,” said Dr George Miller, President & Chancellor, American InterContinental University (AIU). Learning and Talent Development Officers today must make sure that skill sets are up to speed with the challenges of the business world, he advised.
Dr Miller exchanges his ideas on corporate development ahead of the marcus evans Corporate Learning & Talent Development Summit 2013, in Atlanta, Georgia, April 28-30, where AIU will attend as a solution provider.
How could Learning Officers better address the needs of their organization?
They have to make certain that people with the proper skill sets are matched with the right roles. There are constant challenges in the corporate environment. To ensure that skill sets are up to speed with the challenges of the business world the exact needs of personnel must be addressed through education.
How can they identify the missing skill sets and needs of their organization?
They need to engage with at least one learning provider. The partnerships and collaborations that develop between an organization and its learning providers, such as AIU, can greatly enhance the ability of the Chief Learning Officer (CLO) to address the ongoing learning needs within the organization. A company can self-identify or work with us to identify their needs and custom-fit or match the correct educational content to address them. What we can bring to the table is a solution that is consultative in nature, versus being solely from the perspective of the organization.
Why do you consider education as an ongoing need?
Everything in the business environment is changing very rapidly, and change almost always holds implications for education. Someone who took a course on management techniques ten years ago would need to be updated on new techniques and management arrangements, otherwise their skills would probably be out of date.
In certain areas, such as business and technology, there is an ongoing need to re-educate. Education is no longer situational. People need to learn continuously.
If their budget is limited, how should they decide who gets the opportunity to develop extra skills?
It depends on what the organization wants to focus on, and what it aims to accomplish by developing the skills of its employees. It is very much the decision of the CLO, who would need to refer the people who will be entrusted with increased responsibility or responsibility for a given project or task. Also, if someone is in line for a promotion but lacks the relevant skill set for the new job, that person would clearly be a good candidate for continuing education.
